Like so many of you, we are disappointed that A Totally '80s Taste of the Town, originally scheduled for this Saturday, April 25, is cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have tentatively rescheduled the event for October 3, but with today’s uncertainty, we can’t be sure this will be possible.
We were excited to groove and dance the night away to the schweet sounds of the band Quantum Leap, sample food from our righteous restaurant sponsors and bid on some seriously rad silent auction items! All, of course, for an awesome cause — supporting programs and projects throughout the bodacious Baltimore County Public Library system.
As Taste of the Town is our biggest fundraiser of the year, the possibility that we may not be able to have it at all this year is a major cause for concern, as we want to continue to provide funding for programs and projects like Summer Reading Challenge, Battle of the Books, both Storyville locations, STREAM programs for kids, BC Reads, free tax preparation, notary service, story trails and so many more projects and programs all around the county.
While we can’t be together in person on Saturday, we have a fun way to celebrate virtually!
Go to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and post a photo of yourself from the '80s (or any fun throwback picture — we know some of you weren't even born in the '80s!). Tag and challenge eight of your friends to post their photos and encourage them to make a donation to Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library. If each of your friends donates just $10, you’ve raised $80 toward helping us meet our annual fundraising goal to support our literacy projects.
To make things a little bit sweeter, hashtag it using #BCPL80for80s and be entered to win a $50 Amazon gift card, donated by a generous supporter.* Be sure to like our social media pages so you can keep up with news and happenings, including our latest schedule of virtual programs for the entire family.

On Saturday night, April 25, we can still all party in our PJs (or maybe your favorite '80s outfit) with media sponsor Today’s 101.9's “80’s and 90’s Saturday Night,” from 7 p.m. to midnight! Tune in to hear our friend Greg Carpenter spin some throwback tunes. Later, you can jam out to this fun '80s music playlist. Not up for a dance party? You can download one of these classic books from the 1980s or veg out in front of the TV with an '80s movie streamed from the Kanopy app. All of this is available in our collection, for free with your library card.
Your support makes a difference!
Not only does Taste of the Town typically raise over $55,000 for a really good cause, it gives us a chance to highlight some great local restaurants — owned and managed by people in our community, who recognize the importance of a strong public library system. Each restaurant donates their food and time to help make this event such a success. Please consider supporting them by ordering takeout or maybe even a gift card, either now or when they reopen. You can view a full list here.
Our corporate sponsors also allow us to throw a really fun event and raise a lot of money at the same time – thank you, M&T Bank and all of our great corporate partners. You can view the full list here.
As a loyal friend and donor, you understand the important role libraries play in our community and why your support is needed now more than ever. We hope you see this as a fun way to break up the boredom and share with friends and family the important work happening at your local library and its Foundation. While our library doors may be temporarily closed, employees are still working hard each day to provide virtual programs and digital content to the customers we miss so much, including:
- Boosted WiFi signals at 10 of our branches, for those who don’t have internet access at home
- Job resources, resume and job application assistance
- Virtual My Librarian appointments
- Virtual story times and book discussions
- Downloadable materials like books, magazines and audiobooks
- Streaming content from Acorn TV and Kanopy
We are sorry we won’t see you on April 25, but we know we’ll be together again soon. We are looking forward to welcoming back into our branches the more than 4 million customers served annually. If you're too shy to show us an old photo or if you don't have a social media presence, we would still be honored by your support!
Thank you, and please stay safe and healthy.
